Bikechain's Frequently Asked Questions

 The Bike Lending Program

 How long do I get the bike?

 We lend bikes for one week, with a renewal possible if you come to the shop and go through a safety and maintenance check with one of our mechanics. It's just like owning a your own bike!

 Does it come with a lock?

 Yes. Please don't lose it or the key we give you.

 Does it come with lights?

 Yes. Again, please don't lose them.

Does it come with a helmet?

 No. A helmet is required by law if your are under 18 years of age, and we recommend wearing one if you are concerned about your safety, but we can not supply them for both hygiene and safety reasons.

 Where are the brakes?

 Our lending bikes all use coaster or pedal brakes. You engage the brake by moving your feet backwards instead of forwards. This is similar to the bikes many people rode as children. This is also one of the more robust options available, which helps us keep repairs to a minimum and keeps more bikes on the road.

 Can people who are not U of T students borrow bikes?

 No. We only rent bikes to students at the University. We only have 30 bikes, and many students to serve.

Bikechain now rents bicycles free-of-charge to UofT students!

All of our bicycles are single-speed and have coaster brakes. Several also all have baskets to help you get around the campus and the city without wondering what to do with your books.

Come check them out! Look for our bicycles locked up in front of Koffler Student Services Centre on St. George. You can't miss them! They're mostly red or yellow and parked on their very own red racks.

Once you do that, swing by our office across the street in the basement of the International Student Centre.

To rent, you need:

  1. Student ID (TCard);
  2. A second form of Government-issued ID (Health/OHIP cards are not acceptable forms of ID!);
  3. A $100 cash deposit (you will get this back upon return of the bicycle);
  4. To have become a registered member of Bikechain's rental program. This is easy, just come on in and tell us you want to rent a bike! Fill out a simple form (there will be a quiz!), and we'll get everything ready for you with no hassle.

Important Notes:

  • Bikes are rented for seven (7) days.
  • Renewals are possible, at the discretion of Bikechain, provided that you go through a safety and maintenance check under the supervision of one of our mechanics.
  • We provide lights, but not helmets. However, both lights and helmets are available for purchase at Bikechain.
